"My wife and I bought an 11-12 year old house in October of 2008. We learned, shortly thereafter, that our heat pump wasn’t working properly. We had a Home Owners Warranty which came with the purchase of the house so we called the company. They sent a “heating and air conditioning” company to our house. They replaced the fan motor.

The unit seemed to work for a few days, then, with increasingly cold weather, our house would not remain warm. No matter the thermostat setting, we couldn’t get the temperature above 60. Also, I noticed that the heat pump was icing up and the fan was hitting the ice as it ran. I called the warranty company again. Out came the same repair company. They did something and left, assuring us, as they had before, that they had solved the problem. They talked a good game.

Then I noticed that the heat pump had become completely encased in ice, top to bottom, inside and out. I called the warranty company again, out came the repair company. They came out at least twice more, doing enigmatic things and achieving nothing. Our house remained cold.

Finally, the warranty company told us that the repair company had given up and that we could hire our own repair company. I called Kohl’s and spoke to Kevin Kohl. That evening, Kevin’s brother, Ron, came to our house. He stated immediately that, not only was our heat pump not working, but the back up electric furnace wasn’t working properly, either. (The other company never even checked that aspect.) Ron spent two hours getting our furnace running. We were told that, while the furnace was expensive to run, we would be warm until the Kohls could get back out here with a heater to melt the ice and trouble-shoot the heat pump. That night, we were warm for the first time in our new house.

Within a day or so, Ron was back at our house with help and a very big heater. By the end of the day, the heat pump was working. This was a few weeks ago and we have had no problems since. Kevin called afterwards, at least twice, inquiring about our heat. All was well.

The moral of this story is that anyone can talk a good game, but few can actually play it well. As far as I am concerned, you can freeze (or swelter in the Summer) or call Kohl’s.
